The GTi is the perfect blend of fun and practicality, not to mention its incredibly beautiful looks. The MK5 in my opinion has always been the best looking golf model, even before I purchased my own.
MK6's us the same motor as the TSI MKV. Carries the same pros & cons. But the later year MK6's (2013+) from factory came with the revised tensioner. But still deal with the manifold issues. Mk7's are far more reliable on every front. The first year 7's (2015) did suffer from faulty turbos.

The GTI is doing quite well - compare it to the New Beetle which has always been horribly unreliable. The GTI is recomended as well. Plus it did great on Automobile Magazines Four Season Test. Those factors are good enough for me to believe that the GTI is a reasonably reliable car.
First a little about my GTI: I've got a 6-speed 2017 mk7 Golf GTI S with about 52k miles (83km) on it.. I drive a lot which leads to the topic of this post (Now I know Modifications + reliability is a bit of an oxymoron but hear me out) I really love this car and want to keep it until it hits 200k milesif possible. The Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk6 is a compact sports car with a strong emphasis on performance and driving experience. It belongs to the sixth generation of the popular Golf GTI series and has gained a reputation for its reliability and sporty capabilities.

Be aware that the DSG transmission that is optional on the GTI and R, and the AWD system in the R, are additional maintenance. They need periodic (about every 2-3 years) fluid changes, which from the dealer costs around 300-500 each time. IMO: the most reliable is a tie between a manual 1.8TSI Golf (including Sportwagen) and GTI.

The 2022 VW Golf R delivers exactly what we expected in terms of its dynamics, but the fact we prefer the less powerful, front-drive GTI says something. The R has historically always been a hit

A GTI isn't a Civic, yes maintenance will be more expensive, but it's not worlds apart. At the end of the day it's still a Golf, still an economy car, just with a little spice. And if you're even remotely willing to learn a bit and do hands on light maintenance work yourself, it's not prohibitively expensive. 17. .
